Participants: Fallen Angel, CybeRise Description: Cyberise Interview Created On: Tuesday, October 09, 2001 Q: Tell us about yourself. Shed some light on who you are as some of our community does not know you. CybeRise: Well, I’m from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada :) I work for a cable ISP in the network management department. I love playing sports, women and staying active. Anything to do with technology and the future fascinates me. I do tend to have a lot of 12 hr Shifts, but I get a lot of days off in return :) Q: How and when did you get involved with Subpace? CybeRise: I first got involved in Subspace on January 11, 1998. How I remember that exact date... I don’t know... but I first noticed subspace via a friend who had bought the game. At first I thought it was crap cause it ran bad on his computer, but then I tried it at home and was addicted. Q: Tell us if you play, the two zones you play in, how you chose your Subspace name and the number of aliases you have. CybeRise: I play all the time actually. I normally play in Extreme Games and Star War Zone. I don’t know how I chose this name... it was when I was an Internet newbie hmm... back in 1995 and I just chose it cause it sounded cool at the time... as for number of aliases... just a few anonymous ones :) Q: What initially inspired you to start doing work for the Subspace community? CybeRise: As my interest in the game grew, so did my willingness to keep Subspace going. My first mod position was back in a zone called Anarchy... from there I learned what I needed to learn. I started a couple zones named Southpark and Total Anarchy and went then I went on to Subspace.Net. Subspace.net was originally bought as a website for SouthPark :) Q: I see and Subspace.net is now a hub site for the game that’s great. CybeRise: Ya, Subspace.net is definitely a main Subspace hub....and will continue to be so even more in the near future. Q: What is the toughest job for you in Subspace and what is the toughest problem you've had to solve? CybeRise: Toughest job... hmmm... I'd say keeping a staff motivated... both in zone and on websites. Not many people can put the dedication forward to doing something like that. As for the toughest problem... not sure at the moment. Q: As one of the leaders in this community, what is your most rewarding accomplishment in Subspace? What is your next big project? CybeRise: Lol, leaders? I'm just here to play a game and please a few people. :) There have been many things, so to single out one specific accomplishment would take time, but it always brings a smile to my face to see new people in the zones... getting addicted for the first time :) Next project at the moment would be the revamping of Subspace.net... it won't be your typical website. Q: Has your integrity ever been challenged regarding your work in Subspace? How did you handle that? CybeRise: There is always someone who wants to try be a "lamer" and do something like that... best way to handle that would just to play it cool. Or use that handy ?ignore :) Q: Okay, well lets go with that first. What do you envision Subspace.net to be in the future and how do you see DLC playing a part in it? CybeRise: All I will say more about Subspace.net is that it will be more of a community hub. And DLC has always been a part of Subspace.net and will continue to be so in the future. Q: Can you give us any hints on new stuff you’re going to offer at Subspace.net in the future? CybeRise: Right now we are in the process of developing the new website. And no, like I said before... this is not going to be your typical "new design and port everything" website. Just going to say now that it will be more community orientated... and simpler. You'll see something perhaps the end of October. Right now it is hush hush :) Q: When did you become a part of the Subspace council? What area(s) of Subspace do you support within the council? What do you contribute to the Subspace council? CybeRise: Probably a year 1/2 ago. And I represent Subspace.net along with Gameaddicts.net in the council. I contribute a ton of ideas obviously as well as new ones. I continuously push for Subspace/Continuum to live in the future. Q: Has there been any communication within the Council regarding when the next update may be released to the Continuum Client? CybeRise: We have talked about it, yes. As far as I know there are many bugs already fixed in Continuum (next update)... so hopefully soon. Just a matter of when PriitK can find the time to polish it up. Q: What is the most important thing you've learned by working within the Subspace community? CybeRise: To listen to the people. Without all the players we are nothing but an empty game, getting opinions and different point of views is always a positive thing... Q: Give us your words of wisdom for the benefit of our younger members in the community that are interested in becoming staff and doing more for Subspace or their zones. (How do they get in on a ground level and climb the ladder? Qualifications, attributes you look for in your staff, etc.) CybeRise: Dedication is a definitely big one... and only commit yourself to something you know you can do... not only for a month or so. Never ask to be a mod... you will be picked. The key is to stand out from the crowd... be a positive role model... help new players when they have questions or problems in the zone. If you do that, you will be noticed. But then again, suck ups are never good. Q: Has the subject of the Local local.lvl map been discussed. I know the map makers are concerned. CybeRise: I know that it is not in Continuum. It has been discussed yes, and there is talk about expanding it greatly... although I haven't heard about it much lately. Definitely something to bring up again, yes... Q: Where do you see the Subspace community in the next two years? CybeRise: With further advancements I see Subspace and the community more united as well as Subspace being fresh in many aspects. New ships will be there, new tileset expansions and whatever new ideas the community in general thinks up. =D Q: Good thoughts. What is the most important thing you would like to say about Subspace and the community at large? CybeRise: hmm.. *thinks* Subspace is like no other game out there... what makes it such a great game would definitely have to be the community. Subspace also is like no other game in the world. It has captured our hearts and imaginations. Through this game we have built a solid community that has gone through it's ups and down's... but we have survived. If we can get through everything that we have gone through in the past, then there is nothing that can stop us. Personally, I plan on waking up in 2009 and playing subspace.
