Download Central, DLC for short, is the biggest download site
for Subspace files. We try to get all free subspace files out to the
community, inform the community about new files and versions as well as
uploading peoples add-ons and tools to our archived files section as they
get sent to us. We try to save old Subspace files from getting lost forever
by even letting old and "outdated" material on to our archived files
section.
Besides from the huge file archive we also try to serve our users with
unique Subspace related sections. We also have cool online tools related to
the game, most of these are from other sites and we try to collect them so
people don't need to go search for these tools.

In October 2000 the idea of a site to put all SS files I, BoKi,
could find was popped. A lot of searching was done and a lot of downloads
were done. I soon found out that there was a few such "projects" already out
there but none of them were as big as I mine had already become at that
stage. I decided to try make the biggest download site for subspace users.
The project was named Subspace Download Central.
The 5th of November the site went online but only a month later 4th December
my host accused the site of being a warez site and froze the account. At
this point there was still no backup of the material and it was a really
frightening experience. After a bunch of emails to and from my host the
account was reopened a few days later and I quickly made a backup of
everything.
As the site got more and more known Subspace.Net admin contacted me and we
had a long talk. It ended up with the site moving to Subspace.Net server,
away from the host that had frozen my account some 10 days before. In the
move I also got rid of advertisements that the old host put on the pages,
got support for CGI, SSI and more. The only catch was that the site had to
change it's name to Download Central. That we could live with, and we
"merged" with SS.Net. They used my site as their download service and I
linked back to them and kept the site up to date.
Now I had the base for starting to recruit new people and so I did. Rowen7
contacted me offering some 150MB of subspace files he had collected from the
"before" time... (a time when VIE controlled the game) and also his services
if I could use them. Sure I could and I had my first staff member on the
17th of December. He had done his own site in 98, but it too was shut down
due to warez creditability.
We soon started adding more then just files to the site, out of fun one
could say. Most of these new additions needed more work then we could take
care of our selves so more staffers were needed. More and more Editors
joined and even some Programmers.
Nothing really NEW happened until the 22nd of June 2001. This date Rowen7
asked if we were interested in a .com address, his treat. Sure we were and
Rowen7 put in an order for 2 domains, subspacedownloads.com &
continuumdownloads.com .
We had some problems with the way the menu was made, it was really hard to
add new items and only simple Links were allowed in it. This spawned an idea
of having a whole new design, the one we have today.
Rowen7 could fix a server as well and this was an opportunity of a life
time. New design, our own domain, our own server, what more could one want?
This of course meant a lot of work from BoKi to fix a working new design so
we went from FRAMES to TABLES using SSI and made the new design 99%
compatible with browsers other than IE. Many new script ideas were spawned
for the new site since we could decide what the server should allow us to
do.
24th of June 2001 and the server was already up and the 28th the domains
were ours. It would then take some time before all the pages were changed
from the old to the new design and most of the scripts were made so that we
could go public with the new site. We put up a deadline on the 24th of
August but didn't make it... then another at the 1st of October but still
didn't make it. The site finaly went public on the 3rd of December. In this
change we also changed from only a files site to cover file news also and
since the new site offers a lot of new features such as searches, stats, and
files being more structured, we also think we are supplying a better service
to our users.
