INTERVIEW |
 |
|
Participants: FaLLeN AnGeL+, Akai
Description: Akai Interview
Created: December, 2003
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Akai thank you for agreeing to interview with us today.
Akai: My pleasure. :p
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I'd like to start by asking you how you got involved with Subspace/Continuum?
Akai: My brother bought the CD in '97 and well...I pretty much lived on my brother's computer at that time. It had a big monitor. :)
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Which zones did you fly?
Akai: Initially I went into Alpha because it said "start here" or something, but probably about 30 minutes later I went to Chaos to stay. It was the most populous zone at that time. I spent about 3 years there under different aliases, left the game alone every now and then and came back.
I remember I spent a lot of time in South Park when it was up and in the past two years the only zone I've spent a substantial amount of time in has been 17th Parallel.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: How did you select the name Akai?
Akai: Let's see...this name is rather new. I started using it only January of last year. At the time I was thinking of purchasing a large recording type thingy from a company called Akai Pro. (Music is something else I do).
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I see. *smiling
Akai: I didn't end up buying anything from them (a good choice in retrospect) but I liked the name. It means "red" in Japanese.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: What was your most used alias before Akai?
Akai: It may have been 'Watermelon Man', but I honestly cannot remember. I DO remember my first nickname...
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Laughing here.
Akai: it was "0Q." That was in '97.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Any meaning attached to your selection of those nicks Akai?
Akai: Well, 0Q and Akai were probably chosen purely for aesthetics (:p) but 'Watermelon Man' is the name of a piece of music I like a lot, Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters (album). (Head Hunters was the squad I used when I was Watermelon Man. :p).
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Do you actively staff in any zones Akai?
Akai: At the moment I'm on "DevStaff" in 17th Parallel but usually I just contribute to zones without pursuing staff positions.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Please tell us more about what you do on Devstaff for 17th Parallel?
Akai: I guess mostly I just go around fixing everything I see that is imperfectish and e-mailing it to a sysop. I did recently make a map for 17th's public arena that needs a lot of work, too.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I know you answer a lot of good questions on various boards around the community. Which boards do you support and which forums?
Akai: I hang out a lot at Server Help's forums (forums.minegoboom.com / shanky.com/server)
to me, that is where the best tech people of SubSpace are. I also frequent ssforum.net a lot...obviously, I'm an admin there and I try to hit forumhq.net as well. Maybe once a week I go around to all the individual zone boards, too.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I know that is a huge help to everyone Akai.
Akai: I think some of it is, too. :p
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I know you've answered some of my questions on boards. What other things keep you busy with Continuum?
Akai: I dabble with websites some. Every now and then I'll make some really amateur site for somebody needy. At the moment it's possible I will be contributing to sscentral.com, but this is all up in the air I think. Recently I've been getting into C++. I *may* explore ASSS some.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: You are admin for ssforum.net. How long have you admin those boards?
Akai: Not very long. As far as I can remember - one day Polix just gave me admin for some unknown reason...and, well, I was fine with that :p
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Well I know you are doing a good job.
Akai: :p
FaLLeN AnGeL+: What future updates would you like to see implemented in Continuum?
Akai: About 75% of everything that's been suggested on the development board for the past 2 years. :p
Akai: I know adding support for more sound formats would be nice. We've just gotten png, gif and jpg but there's still only wav for sound. Alpha transparency would be nice, and not having to "tile" images for animations.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Are the png, gif, and jpg used typically for the map gfx?
Akai: Most people are probably still using bitmaps (bmp) - which used to be the only format allowed it often compresses down smaller than gif, png or jpg.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: What can you tell people that are interested in contributing to the game?
Akai: Just to have fun making things and visit a forum for help.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: What are you thoughts regarding the longevity of Continuum and it's future?
Akai: Despite PriitK having a day job and hundreds of players constantly whining, this game is developing at a rather steady pace, I think. As for populations, there doesn't seem to be any cause for worry yet. I was playing Infantry (SubSpace's successor) the other day a game far more advanced than this one yet there were about 800+ more people playing THIS game.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: Grins.
Akai: At some point I think this game will be left behind but I don't think any time soon. I'm sure it will never be forgotten.
FaLLeN AnGeL+: I would like to thank you for spending the time with us today Akai and the work you continue to provide to our community. Merry Christmas!
Akai: Thanks, Merry x-mas to you, too :) |
